Pond Lining Bentonite

Waterproofing for Ponds & Reservoirs

Product Overview

While "drilling grade" bentonite is designed to stay in suspension to carry debris, our Pond and Well Grade Bentonite is specifically processed for sealing and plugging applications.

It is almost always a high-swell Sodium Bentonite, typically offered in a coarser, granular, or "chip" form rather than a fine powder, making it ideal for:

  • Pond and lake waterproofing
  • Well plugging and abandonment
  • Canal sealing and water retention
  • Aquaculture applications

The high-swell nature of our bentonite allows it to expand up to 15–30 times its dry volume when it contacts water, creating an impermeable barrier that is self-healing and environmentally safe.

Benefits of Pond Lining Bentonite

Our Pond and Well Grade Bentonite is specifically engineered for sealing and waterproofing applications. Its unique properties make it the preferred choice for environmental and water retention projects.

Here are the primary benefits of using pond lining bentonite:

1. Superior Sealing (The "Self-Healing" Barrier)

The most significant benefit is its ability to expand up to 15–30 times its dry volume when it hits water.

Ponds: When applied to a pond bed, it fills the microscopic gaps between soil particles (sand or gravel), turning the porous ground into an impermeable clay liner.

Self-Healing: If the ground shifts or a small root pierces the layer, the bentonite re-hydrates and swells to "heal" the hole automatically.

2. Well Plugging & Abandonment

For water wells or old boreholes, this grade is used to prevent groundwater contamination.

Waterproof Plug: It creates a permanent, flexible seal that prevents surface chemicals or dirty water from leaking down into clean aquifers.

Ease of Use: Unlike drilling mud which is pumped, "Well Grade" chips are often poured directly into the well. They sink through the water column and swell once they reach the bottom, creating a dense plug.

3. Safety for Ecosystems

Because it is a natural volcanic clay, it is highly preferred for environmental projects.

Non-Toxic: It is safe for fish, livestock, and aquatic plants. Unlike synthetic plastic liners, it doesn't leach chemicals or microplastics into the water.

Indefinite Lifespan: While rubber liners can dry out and crack over 10–20 years, bentonite is a natural mineral that does not "age" or break down chemically.

4. Cost-Effectiveness

Bentonite pond lining offers significant economic advantages over synthetic alternatives.

No Heavy Machinery: For many pond leaks, you can use the "Sprinkle Method" (dropping it directly into the water over the leak area) without draining the pond or hiring a construction crew.

Cheaper than Liners: On large scales (over half an acre), a bentonite treatment is often significantly cheaper than purchasing and installing a HDPE or EPDM rubber liner.
