Superior Bonding Agent for Metal Casting Applications
Foundry Grade Bentonite is a high-purity sodium bentonite used as the primary binding agent in "Green Sand Casting." In this process, it is mixed with silica sand and water to create robust, heat-resistant molds for molten metal.
Key applications in metal casting:
Our Foundry Grade Bentonite is specifically processed to provide high green compression strength (GCS), exceptional thermal stability, and superior reusability for cost-effective, high-quality metal casting operations.
Superior mold strength
Withstands 1500°C+
Reduces porosity defects
Cost-effective recycling
Our Foundry Grade Bentonite is engineered for superior performance in metal casting applications. Its exceptional properties ensure high-quality castings with minimal defects.
Here are the primary benefits of using foundry grade bentonite:
"Green" refers to the fact that the sand mold is still moist when the metal is poured.
The Benefit: Foundry bentonite provides the immediate strength needed for the sand to hold the shape of a complex pattern without collapsing. This allows the mold to be handled, moved, and filled with heavy molten metal without losing its dimensions.
Metal casting involves extreme temperatures (often exceeding 1,500°C for steel).
The Benefit: This grade is specifically selected for its high vitrification point. It doesn't melt or fuse to the metal easily. It maintains the integrity of the mold walls even when in direct contact with liquid fire, preventing "mold wall movement" or "wash" defects.
When molten metal hits a moist mold, it creates a massive amount of steam and gas.
The Benefit: Proper foundry bentonite creates a porous enough bond that these gases can escape through the sand rather than getting trapped inside the metal. This significantly reduces porosity defects (air bubbles) in the finished casting.
The fine particles of the bentonite fill the microscopic gaps between sand grains.
The Benefit: This creates a very smooth "face" on the mold, which translates directly to a smooth surface on the cast metal part. This reduces the need for expensive post-casting machining and grinding.
Foundries operate on a "closed-loop" system where molding sand is recycled thousands of times.
The Benefit: High-quality foundry bentonite has high "active clay" retention. It doesn't "die" (lose its bonding ability) after a single use. This allows foundries to reuse the same sand repeatedly, only adding a small amount of "make-up" bentonite, which drastically lowers production costs.
